Did we mention there was a BBQ?!

The High Holidays are a special time in more ways than one. This concentrated ten-day period is an opportunity for personal reflection and stocktaking. It is also a time to reconnect with our members and connect with potential members.

We want to be sure that our members and those who are new to our community are welcomed and greeted warmly. Our ushers are the front line in making this happen.

This year, along with our new membership model and its volunteer component we are going to try something different––we invite as many of you as possible to serve your community as an usher, welcoming those who attend services, directing them to their seats and providing information on our additional High Holiday services––Hinei Mah Tov, Tot Yom Tov and Teen Discussions.

We are asking our members to sign up for what is in most cases a two-hour slot. The schedule is online and you can sign up by going to: http://www.mysignup.com/shomrei_org_ushers. You can RSVP for the workshop (see below) on the same form at the bottom of the page. Please RSVP no later than Tuesday, Morning, September 8th.

To make sure all of our volunteers are aligned and properly trained, we will be having a brief High Holiday Volunteer Workshop on Wednesday, September 9th at 7:30 PM. The workshop will be preceded by a barbecue prepared by our volunteer master chef, John Lasiter. We thank John for offering to do this and for all he brings to Shomrei.

If you have any questions please contact Jerilyn Marguilies at email hidden; JavaScript is required or Nick Levitin at email hidden; JavaScript is required, they will be happy to answer them.

The intent of the workshop is to focus on:

  •   The richness of our spiritual community
  • Positively re-enforce our volunteers about the importance of the task in front of us
  • Enable us to connect with hundreds of people and be a part of something exquisitely wonderful
  • Big Picture of the Holiday
    • A walk-through of each day
    • Usher responsibilities
    • Gabbaim duties (because more is required to perform these duties, Jerilyn will sign up people for this position herself.)

Shomrei is dependent on the generosity of its members. Your contribution of time and funds is what sustains our community and makes all that we do possible.

Thank you for considering being an usher. If you sign up to be one, you will be providing a great service to the members of Shomrei at a very special time of year.

Regards,
Nick
