What’s happening in JLC! Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

A word from Morah Fran, our K-2 JLC teacher:

The school year is off to a busy start, and our classroom filled with the youngest JLC students is humming with excitement. The children really enjoy working together in small groups, and they are eager to choose different projects each day. Myself and Morah Lisa, our Hebrew immersion teacher, help to guide the children, in addition to working with them one on one to develop their Hebrew skills.

We have done two plays in class so far: Gershon’s Monster is a book about tashlich and Rosh HaShanah. The children were fed the story, and then they used a combination of their own words and the lines of the story to reenact the play. We learned that we need to think about others and be regretful when we have done something wrong.

We also worked on a play for Sukkot, which helped us understand the key points of the holiday.

Our curriculum also allows the children to explore ethics. We have been learning about taking responsibility for our actions, and the value of giving tzedakah and caring for those less fortunate. These concepts are reinforced through many games, such as custom bingo boards, mazes, puzzles, and more.

A highlight of Sukkot for many of the children involved building Sukkot using a variety of materials. We made a sukkah out of legos, another out of magna tiles, another out of greenery (leaves, flowers, twigs), and even one out of play doh. However, the favorite might have been the edible sukkah!
