Friends,
Over the Thanksgiving break, my family and I went to Israel for a short visit with family. It has been over a year since I’ve last been, so I didn’t know what to expect. I found a very complicated country, conflicted between daily grief and the want/need to keep the daily routine. I checked in on our Medicycle and am happy to report that it is already making a difference in Tel Aviv. Next time, I will try to visit it. I am very appreciative of this community, its generosity, and its commitment to Israel.
Even though Israel has great food, so do we! Thanks to Mustafa and our volunteers, we have wonderful meals every Shabbat. Please join us and share your thoughts and ideas. Sponsoring Kiddush is a great way to share your life events with the community. If you are interested in contributing to the Kiddush fund or sponsoring a Kiddush, please reach out to me. We have new menus and pricing.
Safety is always a concern at Shomrei. This week, our JLC students met with Federation representatives to learn what to do in case of an emergency. Thank you, Greg, for partnering with us. We will schedule additional training for adults – please stay tuned and participate, even if you attended a class in the past.
Our committees are hard at work, ensuring that Shomrei always has something to offer. On January 1, the last day of Winter Break, we will celebrate the last night of Hanukkah together. The Latke Lads will serve latkes, and we will also have games and crafts.
Test your trivia knowledge and familiarity with Shomrei History at our Trivia Night on January 11. Spend some adult time with friends that you know and new friends you will meet.
On Saturday, February 1, we will honor Nancy and Charlie Breslin for all they do for our community and recognize Romy Rost as an up-and-coming Shomrei Star. Funds raised at this year’s Art Mazel Tov will go towards bettering our school.
Bringing in the light:
Now that the work on the first floor is complete, Morah Vanessa and Morah Kathy used this opportunity to study about the Mezuzah with their Pre-K class. They learned why and how we place it in our door entrance and looked at the scroll. Then, we put one together at the new entrance to the preschool.
Thank you to the Social Action Committee and the entire community for generously purchasing gifts for Family Promise during their winter drive. I’m very proud to be a part of this kind and generous congregation.
Looking forward to another fun year,
Ehud
