As you walk into the building, you’ll notice that the first floor has a fresh new look. Shout out to Ariel Simm for helping design the lobby and donating the bench cushions and the new bulletin boards. We have a new board for community notes. If you offer babysitting or want a fourth to play Mahjong, bring your note to the office for posting. And speaking of the office, we finally finished the renovations and have moved back into our new space. We will return to regular office hours, which are 9am-11am / 1pm-5pm, Monday – Friday (with an early 3pm close on Fridays).
During these troubling times, we continue to ensure our building is safe for our community. We received an additional grant (the third year in a row!) from the Department of Homeland Security to continue improving and strengthening our building security (some visible and some not-so-visible improvements).
As we finish the holidays of Tishrei, the Jewish month of Cheshvan has no holidays. The sun sets earlier (thank you, daylight saving time), and the weather gets cooler. Golda Och Academy, where my children attend school, is having “Cheshvan of Kindness,” where kids, parents, and staff learn about and perform acts of kindness. I encourage everyone to add some light and spread some good in the world. My family and I were exposed to a great organization called Cold Noses Warm Hearts, which matches foster and adopting families with pets. We fostered a dog for a month and gave her a warm and loving home for the first time in four years. The organization provides foster families with food, equipment, and all the necessary medical treatment as they find pets their forever home. Rachel, our foster, was not the right fit for our family as she weighed more than both kids combined, but she found a wonderful family in Connecticut. If you’d like to learn more, check them out: http://www.coldnosewarmheart.org/home.html.
The night between November 9 and 10 marks the anniversary of Kristallnacht (the night of the broken glass). Shomrei will again this year join the Spread The Light initiative and keep the synagogue lights on to show the triumph of the Jewish spirit. If you pass by and see the lights, please send me a photo.
Our Shomrei committees are busy planning upcoming events, activities, and mitzvot. If you’re interested in joining or just want to say hello, please stop by.
Lehitraot,
Ehud
