Michael Kogan, Scholar-In-Residence

We’ve had to postpone the Scholar-In-Residence Weekend. Stay tuned for the new date.

Michael KoganThis year, we are delighted to be able to once again offer a Shomrei Emunah Rabbi and Hilde Schnitzer Scholar-in-Residence weekend on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16. It has been several years since our last Scholar-in-Residence weekend. This used to be an annual event organized by our Adult Education Chairperson, Dr. Michael Kogan.

It is, therefore, fitting that our Speaker for this year’s Scholar-in-Residence weekend should be Michael Kogan himself. Michael will be permanently relocating to Charleston, South Carolina. The weekend will, therefore, offer us not only an opportunity to hear Michael but also provide a means of honoring Michael for his past contributions to Shomrei Emunah. Michael will address us at Friday evening (8 pm) and Saturday morning (9:30 am) services.

Michael Kogan has been a professor of Religion at Montclair State University for almost 40 years. He is an active participant in the Jewish-Christian dialogue and the author of several very influential articles on its theological foundations. His most recent publication book, Opening the Covenant: A Jewish Theology of Christianity, was published in November 2007 by Oxford University Press. Michael’s research interests include contemporary Jewish and Christian thought, biblical hermeneutics, and existential theology.

In 1965 the Second Vatican Council declared that God loves the Jews. Before that, the Church had taught for centuries that Jews were cursed by God and, in the 1940s, mostly kept silent as Jews were slaughtered by the Nazis. On Friday evening, Michael will talk about this change in the Catholic Church’s view of Judaism and how it came about. On Saturday morning, he will highlight the role of Jewish and Protestant converts to Catholicism – focusing particularly on Monsignor Oesterreicher, who founded the Institute of Judeo-Christian Studies at Seton Hall University – in bringing about this change.
Please help us support this weekend. Send your check for $36 to Shomrei Emunah Schnitzer Institute and you will be listed as a sponsor in the program, and have the profound thanks of all of us.

All congregants, family, friends and members of the wider community are invited for both talks, for the Oneg on Friday night, and for the Kiddush luncheon on Saturday. Please join us for this important event including good ideas, good food and good fellowship.

See you there!
Warm Regards,
