Rabbi Greenstein Awarded Fellowship at Harvard University

We are very pleased to announce that our Rabbi, David Greenstein, has received the Daniel Jeremy Silver Fellowship at the Center for Jewish Studies at Harvard University. This fellowship is awarded to an active congregational rabbi who has demonstrated exceptional intellectual and academic ability and interest, originality, and energy in the pursuit of Jewish scholarship. The fellowship runs from January 1 through May 31, 2019. During this time Rabbi Greenstein will be on sabbatical from Shomrei to concentrate on his studies in Cambridge, MA.

Shomrei board members Geoff Sadow (head of our Ritual Committee) and Dan Winter are co-chairing a small committee that will discuss and arrange for all aspects of ritual and pastoral care during Rabbi Greenstein’s absence. While we will miss the Rabbi during this time, we are excited about the opportunities that will be created by the invitation of guest clergy, lecturers and musical scholars as well as by the involvement of our own congregants and staff.

Geoff and Dan will share details as they are developed. Any questions you have in the short term may be asked at our upcoming annual meeting on Thursday, June 14.

We wish a hearty Mazal Tov to Rabbi Greenstein for this amazing achievement!

Warm regards,
Fern Heinig
President Shomrei Emunah

Editor’s Note:

The Fellowship was established in honor of the late Rabbi Dr. Daniel Jeremy Silver, Harvard Class of 1948, of Cleveland, Ohio, by his family and friends. It is awarded to an active congregational rabbi who has demonstrated exceptional intellectual and academic ability and interest, originality, and energy in the pursuit of Jewish scholarship.

It is intended to allow the recipient to begin, continue, or complete a piece of serious research in some area of Jewish scholarship before he or she returns to congregational life. To pursue this concentrated course of work and study, the Silver Fellow will enjoy full access to the unique resources of the University, its libraries, professors, staff, and courses.
