Mesh Cafe June 23, 2015

MESH June 23 2015Despite high humidity, thunder showers, and Montclair High graduation, Shomrei’s MESH Cafe performed with its usual skill and panache, serving dinner last night to eighteen appreciative guests. Sarita Eisenberg and Sarah Steindel cooked it all and helped serve and clean up. Linda Ariel served as head waiter. Lou Hammerman was chief grocery shopper, pot scrubber, and bottle washer.

The mouth-watering menu consisted of chips and salsa, salad, baked chicken, roasted carrots and broccoli, oven-baked saffron rice, bread, fruit salad and peanut butter cookies. Thanks to all for a job well done.

Cook’s Note: Stuart is very kind but here’s a look behind the scenes: Lou bought 12 pounds of chicken legs, which seemed like a lot. Only it turned out to be only 12 legs. So he raced over to Brookedale Shoprite to buy more. In the meantime, I got the rice in the oven and decided to go ahead and put the broccoli in too. At home, I cook broccoli for 20 minutes at 400 degrees, so I figured it would take a bit longer since the oven was set at 350. Well, about 15 minutes later, Linda came into the kitchen and said “What’s that smell?” It was the broccoli starting to burn!! I quickly donned oven mitts to get the broccoli out of the oven. MESH June 23 2015, 2Only one of the mitts had a hole in the thumb and I got a second degree burn on my right thumb. Thank goodness Sarah & Lou were there to take over cutting the fruit salad. The rest of the evening went swimmingly. There was enough food for everyone to have generous helpings of everything and our guests were, as always, very appreciative of the quality and quantity of food.  One woman even suggested that we write a cookbook of all the wonderful dinners that we’ve served at Shomrei.  Chef Sarita
