Mesh Cafe Sept 6, 2016

From Captain Aileen Grossberg:

On a balmy September evening, Shomrei’s MESH Cafe inaugurated the 2016-2017 MESH year. We served 24 guests – some new to Shomrei- a nutritious, economical meal of tossed green salad, buttered Italian bread, casserole of ground turkey, onions, eggplant , mushrooms, corn and spaghetti sauce over pasta.  Many of our guests asked for seconds. We replaced the turkey with tofu for our vegetarians.  Look for the recipe in a future Shomrei Week.

mesh 4The meal was especially economical because the salad was contributed by Heather Brown from the teacher training session and we used items like pasta and creamer  from the fridge and pantry, a good way to keep our stock of food fresh. Always check our supplies for items that can be used for the evening’s meal.

Dessert was mixed fruit and apple cinnamon pastries.

mesh 2Helpers included cooks Aileen Grossberg and Lynne Kurzweil, adult volunteer Erin Berman, teen volunteer Amalia (back again for another year) and MESH staffers Devlyn, Bonny and Adrienne who left the kitchen in better shape than we found it.

Thanks as always to Carlos and Lawrence, our custodial staff and to Gwen Ames, MESH director, who stopped by to drop off MESH aprons for the volunteers. Now we will serve in style.

mesh 3Don’t forget to come to the MESH kick-off orientation on Thursday, October 6. A light supper will be served.

Cooks and servers are needed for next week.
