From Captain Linda Ariel:

It was a lively evening at the Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei. It was a warm sunny evening, and the days were surely getting longer. We hosted 24 guests and were able to send four additional lucky people home with dinner.  Sarita Eisenberg was top chef with the many able assistants, Chaya Kotlowitz, Charles Steindel, and Sarah Steindel ably preparing a delicious and colorful feast. Jonah and Madeline were the teen volunteers who did anything and everything that was needed to help. Lou Hammerman pitched in as both a server and a pot washer par excellence.

The guests entered and settled in, and the entire Shomrei volunteer group came out to welcome them. The menu was announced, which included kale salad topped with a corn salad with challah and butter on the side, meat loaf, smashed potatoes, and grilled vegetables, and fruit salad and cookies. The guests cheered with anticipation. Then the  HaMotzi was recited as the guests listened intently.

The MESH team included Adrienne and Bonny as well as Joe and Darren. Kevin of Shomrei was of great help as well.

About MESH:

The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches.  Volunteers at each institution cook and serve hearty, nutritious meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights. A good meal, and perhaps as important, social interaction and companionship offer respite to those who need it. Please help fulfill this crucial mitzvah by volunteering.

Linda has been a member of Shomrei for over three decades. Over the years, she has been Hebrew School Co-Chair, Program Chair, and Social Action Chair and co-chaired the first Shomrei retreat at the Nevele. Linda also led Tot Shabbat and Tot Rosh HaShana for many years. Linda has lived in Israel where she graduated from Hebrew University and then upon returning to the States received her master's degree in social work. Probably the most special and precious bit of information that she has to share is that her three sons are independent caring people with values that she respects.
