The Kitchen Team!Feeding the needy at Shomrei, every Tuesday night

From Naz Singh, Preschool Parent Coordinator:

Shomrei’s MESH Cafe feeds approximately 20 homeless people every Tuesday night. The MESH volunteers shop, cook and serve a nutritious and delicious meal in a warm and gracious environment at the synagogue.

On Dec 2nd, a group of preschool parents, in conjunction with MESH Cafe, helped to provide one of these meals. After Debra Caplan and Naz Singh attended a brief MESH meeting, the consistent volunteers welcomed the preschool parents to help in organizing a meal for our weekly guests. In planning for the meal, the parents first made sure that the preschoolers had an active role in creating place mats that would create a welcoming table to eat at.

The preschool parent cooks, Lauren Rosenthal, Debra Caplan, Brian LaRose and Sonya Khersonsky created a beautiful menu that consisted of herbed baked chicken, pasta salad with beans and veggies, roasted root vegetables, mashed potatoes, a fruit salad and baked apple crisp pies.

A special thank you to Erica Gerstman for the generous donation that made it possible for the preschool parents to purchase the ingredients needed to make such a wonderful meal for the 25 homeless people that rely on the help of our community every week.

If you are interested in creating another Preschool MESH night, please contact Naz Singh at email hidden; JavaScript is required to find out about all the ways you can get involved by either donating, preparing food, meeting n greeting our guests, helping with clean up and/or giving a donation that can make it all happen!

From Captain Sarita Eisenberg:

We served 14 grateful guests this past Tuesday night. There was a huge amount of food, with plates piled high and enough for seconds and even some leftovers to go.

Although I have participated in MESH many times, this evening was particularly special because of the participation of our preschool parents. The meal was a cooperative effort organized by Debra Kaplan and Naz Singh: Appetizer was a delicious pasta & bean salad prepared by Sonya Khersonsky. DebraMain course was herb-baked chicken thighs prepared by Brian LaRose. Sides included a wild rice dish with cranberries prepared by Brian, mashed potatoes prepared by Debra, and roasted root vegetables prepared by Lauren Rosenthal. To complete the meal, Lauren prepared a fruit salad and Debra prepared an apple crisp. Naz did the shopping. Beautiful place mats were created by the preschool students. Yasher koach to you all. Thank you to Erica Gerstman and to Manny Goldman and Naomi Weinshenker for their donations to cover the costs of the food.

Thanks also to our servers. Lou Hammerman pitched in to help with serving and clean up. Our amazing crew of youthful helpers included: Ben and Caleb, Jesse, Lucas and Paul and also newcomers Rachel and Louis F. We also had three of our wonderful MSU interns, Stephanie, Veronica, and James. And a special thank you to Carlos who was there to do the final clean up.

I feel truly blessed to be a part of a community that provides this opportunity for so many people to come together to help others.
