The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei was back in the swing after our summer hiatus. Chef Lynne Kurzweil, along with the pro team of Alex Kent, Joan Zief and Linda Wieseneck, pulled off a splendid feast supplementing ample leftovers from Noa Baird’s bat mitzvah which were graciously donated by Rabbi Julie and Justus.
We combined several types of rice with thin noodles, corn off the cob, olive oil and seasonings to make Rice-a-Roni Pilaf. There were beautiful and colorful roasted vegetables and roasted potatoes that we supplemented with an extra 4 lbs of roasted baby carrots. The main course was 18 lbs of roasted salmon with a Dijon brown sugar crust. Each of the 50 meals included a hearty slice of cake like meringue and cheesecake, a club roll, a banana and a bottle of water.
The team had the 50 meal bags packed and ready to go before 4:30 pm when Lynne transported the bags to The Office. When I pulled into the parking lot, several guests who were waiting outside helped me bring in the bags of bags. Joe, the MESH Executive Director, greeted me with a big smile and expressed how grateful they are for all that Shomrei does. We funded over 200 meals during July and August. Additionally, whenever we have leftovers from the weekend, Aileen and others bring them over on Mondays to supplement what MESH is serving. This past Monday, Aileen Grossberg brought over additional leftovers from the weekend which were ample. We don’t like to let anything go to waste!
