Last Tuesday night we welcomed 23 grateful guests to the MESH Cafe at Shomrei. When the group learned that Chef John Lasiter was in the kitchen they applauded, even before the menu was announced! Chef John, along with sous chefs Adrienne and Elliot, met their expectations as evidenced by the empty platters returned to the kitchen. First course was hummus and pita chips and several guests asked for seconds. (A few years ago I recall hummus not being a popular item. Our guests have now embraced a Shomrei staple!).
From Captain Linda Ariel:
On a warm spring evening, the MESH Cafe at Shomrei welcomed twenty-four guests to a delicious dinner. John Lasiter, with the able support of sous chef, Adrienne Lasiter, created a meal with a palate of flavors that delighted the hungry group. The menu included hummus with pita chips, a colorful vegetable salad, bread and butter, sockeye salmon topped with a mustard glaze, roasted scallions, and home baked chocolate peanut butter pinwheels with ice cream. From Captain Captain Melissa Elbaum:
Yasher Koach on a wonderful welcome back (indoor!) BBQ and first day of JLC! The students were overwhelmingly positive about the change in the building and program (Wow! was a common response upon seeing the new furniture/rooms!) The rooms looked great, the teachers were warm and wonderful, and the students had amazing energy. I am thrilled for the year to come. Assistant Education Directors, Lily Lucey and Aylah Winter were both wonderful in their interactions with students and parents, and I think everyone is responding to having such a capable team in place.
Nourish your brain, body and being on Shabbat at Shomrei. Open to the public. The Shomrei Jewish Learning Center is introducing a series of topical conversations and/or activities for adults to be held on alternating Saturdays. Meeting from 10:30-11:30 am @nourish will offer great coffee, great noshes and great conversation! The topics will relate to current events, Jewish living in a modern world, food, history, or anything, well, nourishing!
If Robert’s Rules of Order could be fun, this is how to do it! Precede the meeting with lots of freshly grilled burgers, hot dogs, roasted marshmallows, scores of kids and icy watermelon! Continue reading
Captain Alex Kent:
The Shomrei MESH Cafe fed 25 hungry guests Tuesday night. Chef Arden Epstein presided in the kitchen, along with her friend Meredith Barrentine. First up were savory zucchini muffins served with grape tomatoes. The main course was baked cod with herbs, roasted broccoli, mashed sweet potatoes, and cole slaw made by Aileen Grossberg. Rolls were served on the side. The meal was capped off with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. All guests received a to-go bag with a roll, granola bars, and clementines.
We welcomed 24 guests on a (finally) warm spring evening to Shomrei’s MESH Cafe. When informed that Chef John Lasiter was in the kitchen, there was a round of applause. Seriously, this is the type of spontaneous display that occurs most Tuesday evenings at our cafe. We have a consistent group of eager, appreciative and hungry guests who enjoy the fellowship as well as the food. Starter was a large tossed salad with a scoop of tuna salad (kiddish leftover) and a hunk of challah with margarine. Next was succulent BBQ chicken, roasted potato wedges and sautéed broccoli rabe. Homemade chocolate peanut butter turnovers rounded out the meal. Continue reading
Adrienne Shulman Lasiter and Shirley Grill, Shomrei Education Co-Chairs, announced today that Sara Birnbaum has decided not to renew her contract as Director of the JLC (Hebrew School) when it expires in June. Because of the the long commute, Sara has decided to pursue other opportunities. Heather Brown has been named as her replacement in a new position overseeing both the JLC and the Preschool. Grill and Shulman Lasiter made the announcement in a letter to Shomrei families and congregants.
Sara’s warmth has created a supportive learning environment and she has formed wonderful relations with our children, as principal and teacher. Sara teaches Hebrew and leads our STOM program; under Sara’s guidance, the STOM students have become a close knit group, engaging with each other as they do mitzvoth and grow together. We thank Sara for her service and for bringing love and ruach to our community. Continue reading
On an unseasonably balmy night in late December, we welcomed 21 guests to the MESH Cafe at Shomrei. Chef John Lasiter was in his usual top form, preparing a delicious meal for our IHN families and our MESH guests. Dessert was homemade Cherry Pastry.
