MESH menu 2015 dec 24A few weeks ago, it came to our attention that the Thursday evening MESH Cafe (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) was not going to be serving dinner on Christmas Eve.  Aileen Grossberg was signed up to prepare a meal for our IHN guests (Interfaith Hospitality Network, temporary housing for homeless families) that night and Aileen graciously offered to expand the meal to include our MESH guests.

Aileen prepared a feast that was so much appreciated by 14 of our MESH regulars, complete with holiday tablecloths and paper goods and sparkling cider!  Please note the menu which was displayed on the dinner table. Continue reading

Report From Captain Stuart Green: 

Shomrei’s MESH Cafe last night provided another hot and nourishing meal to a group of 16 appreciative guests. Chef John Lasiter, assisted by Deanna London, Elliot Lasiter and Ethan Coplan, prepared a memorable meal of fresh salad greens, challah, succulent roasted chicken, savory carrots, rice, and blueberry galette. The meal was preceded by blessings over the Hannukah candles, and guests were later entertained with seasonal songs by the singing group that practices in the shul on Tuesday nights. Guests were given go bags with cookies (courtesy of June Zimmerman) and clementines on their way out. Continue reading

Afghan Braised Spinach

This month marks the start of a new Kol Emunah feature: From the Shomrei Kitchen will focus on topics like feeding the hungry, recipes, Kiddush menus, kashrut, profiles of volunteers and any other issues that touch our busy kitchen. With the warmth and variety of Afghan food still in our memories, this month’s recipe is taken from the spectacular vegetarian dinner Jill Hamburg Coplan spearheaded and prepared with the assistance of John Lasiter. After looking over the recipes, we chose a dish that wasn’t too bland or too spicy and that was easy to prepare from readily available ingredients. We hope you find the dish just right.
