questions.inddWhere does it say that brisket is the dish of choice on Passover? Where does it say that gefilte fish is de rigueur? Where does it day that sweet wine is a must? And where does it say that one is obligated to replicate everyday food rather than going with natural food that can be eaten anytime?

The Lampert Library’s staff (me) has researched the questions: there are no rules. Much of what’s served- other than ritual foods- is just custom and what was available or what could be adapted. Even among the ritual foods there is a lot of choice. Continue reading

Passover: from soup to…

Passover is just around the corner. This year, of course, the question of “ why is this night different from all other nights?” takes on a new meaning.

One thing I’ve found is that there is more cooking going on. People are creating foods from scratch especially baked goods and soups.

Mesh Cafe May 1, 2018

MESH

From Captain Alex Kent:

On the gorgeous first day of May, Shomrei’s MESH cafe fed a full house of 24 guests.  Shomrei member and Pre-School parent Melissa Elbaum was the chef, and she was ably assisted by a skeleton crew, who nonetheless pulled off the meal with no snafus.  Thanks to Melissa’s preparation and organization, the meal was good to go with apple chopping and other help from our regular MESH teens Amalia and Sarah.  Other than that, helpers included Chief dishwasher Captain Alex Kent, and the MESH staff of Adrienne, Mr. Tyson, and security guard Mary.   Continue reading
