Welcome to the Board of Trustees 2022

Yasher koach to the 2020-21 Board of Trustees. Special thanks to outgoing board members Sara Ann Erichson, Michael Legman, and Adrienne Shulman Lasiter.

Welcome to new officers Michael Sag and Eric Feldman, who were previously serving as trustees, Rachel Kanter, and Mara Weinstein. Welcome to new trustees Debra Caplan and Martin Kurzweil.

New Officers

Michael Sag, President

Michael moved to Montclair in 2009, has been a member at Shomrei Emunah since 2014, has served on the Education Committee since 2016 and as a Trustee since 2021. Michael is in his 6th year as the Managing Director of WP Theater, a small not-for-profit theater company focused on plays and musicals written and directed by women.

Michael loves spending time with his three kids, Jordan (Renaissance), Noah (Bullock) and Elliott (Over The Rainbow) and keeping the outside of his house looking sharp! Michael’s wife, Lindsey, is General Manager at NY’s Manhattan Theater Club and serves on the Off-Broadway League’s Board of Directors. Michael is an adjunct professor at Montclair State University and currently serves as president of the Association for Non-Profit Theater Companies (ANTC). An avid fan of the NY Rangers, NY Yankees and NY Giants, invite him to a game and he’s likely to join you!

Eric Feldman, Vice President for Building and Grounds

Eric Feldman and his family have been members of Shomrei since 2018 and have lived in Montclair since 2012. Eric works in technology and is the Chief Information Officer for The Riverside Company, a global private equity firm. Eric’s wife, Sara, is an active member of the Shomrei community, teaching yoga and serving on various committees and their two sons, Shai and Jonah, recently celebrated their b’nai mitzvah in March. Their daughter, Orly,had volunteered with MESH and is a rising junior at Montclair High School.

The entire Feldman family enjoys traveling, spending time with friends and the kids love their summers at Camp Ramah in Poconos.

Rachel Kanter, Executive Vice President

Rachel and her family moved to Montclair in 2008 and joined Shomrei soon after. She is the co-chair of Art On The Walls, has been on the Board of Trustees, the Rabbinic Search Committee and is now the executive vice president and chair of the Rabbi Transition Committee.

Rachel is a fiber artist and explores the relationship between feminism and Judaism in her work. She lives with her husband Andy, her three children, Siona, Pacey and Avital and their dog Yofi.

Mara Weinstein, Vice President for Education

Mara and her husband, Adam, moved to Montclair three years ago from Hoboken and have three sons — Ari, 8, Gabriel, 6, and Cole 2.5. Ari and Gabriel attend Bullock Elementary and Shomrei’s JLC. Cole begins Shomrei preschool this fall.

Mara previously served on Shomrei’s Rabbi Search Committee and as member of Shomrei’s Education Committee. Mara is an attorney focusing on alternative dispute resolution.

New Trustees

Debra Caplan, Term expiring 2024

Debra Caplan has been a member of Shomrei since her family moved to Montclair in 2013. Her children Vi (12) and Maya (10) both attended Shomrei’s preschool and are current JLC students. Debra is a Yiddish theater historian and Associate Professor of Theater at Baruch College, City University of New York, where she teaches theater history and practice. She lives with her husband, Nick, their two children, two dogs, and a bearded dragon in Montclair.

Martin Kurzweil, Term expiring 2023

Martin grew up in Shomrei (as the son of longtime members Lynne and Lanny) and re-joined the congregation, along with his wife, Fiona, when they moved to Glen Ridge in 2015. Their son Jack attended Shomrei Preschool and, with his brother Micah, is now in the JLC. You can often find Martin at kid- and family-related Shomrei activities, and he was a member of the 2021-22 Rabbi Search Committee.
In his day job, Martin leads a nonprofit research and consulting group focused on access, affordability, and success for underserved students in higher education. He has also practiced and taught law and worked in other areas of education policy and research. Martin loves to talk politics and policy, has a hearty appetite for good food, and tries really hard to exercise.
