A Sweet Reunion – Remembering My Aunt Olga

Rich Farenci, his son Louis and Aunt Olga

I was at the unveiling this past weekend for my aunt Olga, who had passed away last May at the age of 87.

She was a remarkable woman and after her funeral last year, I spoke of her to our Wednesday night minyan group.

I’d like to share one more story about her.

Olga’s first husband, my uncle Alex, had died of a heart attack a few months before my bar mitzvah, before he could turn 50.

They had been married for over 20 years and they were very much in love.

Some time after Olga’s funeral, my cousin told me that when Olga was preparing herself for her end, she had only one concern –
she was worrying about meeting Alex again because he was so young and handsome when he left this world and she was now an old woman.

After the unveiling, I shared with my cousin a verse from the Zohar that we had just happened to study at our last class which I think is a beautiful answer to Olga’s concern.

The verse reads as follows:

…after all the righteous depart from this world, their souls ascend; and the blessed Holy One prepares for them another image in which to be clothed, resembling how they were in this world.

It is now very sweet for me to imagine the reunion of Olga with her beloved.
