Shabbat Spotlight Series

Shabbat SpotlightAs we head into March, I thought it would be a good time to re-cap the wonderful success of our Shomrei Spotlight Series. Each of our guests has been terrific, educating us on many different subjects.

We’ve heard from a member of the staff of the Israeli Consulate, a courageous young Afghan woman who is attending college in the US, and a Rutgers University Jewish Studies Professor who teaches a most unorthodox seminar, to name a few. We have several more planned through the Spring, beginning on March 21 when we will be joined by artist Susan Kaplow, who is currently showing her artwork in our gallery.

Susan has published a book called Hard Blessings, inspired by her own experience with illness. “At every turn,” she explains, “our tradition offered me a blessing—a needed chant or prayer, or text, or ritual—that helped me through this long and frightening time.”

A note of thanks to the many members of our community who have worked hard to make each of these monthly programs a success—from organizing the events, planning and preparing dinners, to providing exceptional musical enhancements to our Kabbalat Shabbat services. A big Yasher Koach to all!

If you have not experienced our events, I urge you to give them a try. We offer these compelling programs at no cost to the community. Unfortunately, we do incur some expenses including refreshments for the Oneg and transportation for our guests. With that in mind, we ask you to help us continue this series for years to come. Please consider sponsoring the series by contacting the office and donating whatever you feel is appropriate.

I hope to see you on Friday, March 21st to learn more about art and healing.
