MESH Report 4/30/2019

Fern Mesh 1Report from Captain Fern Heinig:

The Carol Starr MESH Cafe served 22 very grateful guests.  Not only did our guests leave with a full stomach but our volunteers left with a full heart.  Teen volunteers thanked me for “allowing” them to donate their time to help cook and serve.  Adult volunteers took out calendars so they could commit to the next night to volunteer.  Captain Fern left feeling like the world could be repaired after how grateful our volunteers were for the opportunity to cook and serve our guests

Captain Fern’s cooking crew consisted of teens Jonah, Elana, Meg, Hanna, Henry, almost teen Evan, and adults Holly, Elana, Tracy, Brian, and Jeff.  As usual, it was organized chaos as we prepared:
Fruit Salad
Potato Leek Vegetable Soup
Sweet and hot meatballs
Mashed Potatoes
Cupcakes and apple sauce for dessert

We were assisted by MESH staff Bonny, Adrienne, and security Joe and Montclair student Kaiini.
We had many individual thank you’s from our guests for the hearty, filling meal (the previous night dinner was noodles and sauce).  There was a request by several guests for the Carol Starr MESH Cafe to open every night.

About MESH:

The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches.  Volunteers at each institution cook and serve hearty, nutritious meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights. A good meal, and perhaps as important, social interaction and companionship offer respite to those who need it. Please help fulfill this crucial mitzvah by volunteering.
