It may have been dreary outside but in the Shomrei kitchen the atmosphere was warm and cheery. Chef Aileen Grossberg planned a hearty, comforting meal of chopped vegetable salad( tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, carrots celery, and olives with a light dressing of vinegar and oil), glazed meatloaf, and rice with corn and peas. Each dinner included an Italian roll a container of applesauce, a trio of sweets, a breakfast bar and water.
Sous chefs Susan Rosenbaum and Rhonda Silver made short work of chopping vegetables for the salad. The entire crew including teen Jaden pitched in to package the food and fill the green takeaway bags. Our faithful dishwasher Susan helped leave the kitchen ready for the next event. Shirley and David Grill capped off the MESH session by picking up the bags to deliver to the former Office Restaurant where the guests can enjoy their meal in warmth and comfort.
We are always in need of cooks. Remember you can cook at home alone, with a friend, at Shomrei or even purchase part of the meal. Aileen and Lynne will happily guide you and answer any questions.

The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches. While in-person service has been discontinued, we are providing hearty, nutritious take-out meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights.
