B’nai Mitvah families shopped and prepared meals for MESH this week under the guidance of experienced MESHer Sarita Eisenberg. The meal was Sarita’s usual – barbequed chicken, roasted potatoes, and salad. We cooked and did some packing on Monday and then reheated the food and completed the packing on Tuesday.
Brian and Mom Naz Singh and Jacob and Mom Sivia Lapidus did the shopping and delivered the supplies to Shomrei with a few additional items purchased last minute by Sarita, Lynne Kurzweil, and Lindsey Sag.
Maya Taft and Mom Debra Caplan made homemade cookies for dessert.
In the kitchen on Monday were the Sag family – Mom Lyndsey, Jordan (an experienced MESHer from doing Teen MESH), and Noah – plus Natan Slobodien and Lou Hammerman.
Noah, Natan, and Jordan prepared the barbeque sauce and mixed it with the chicken.
Lyndsey and Lou prepared the potatoes with some seasoning assistance from Noah.
Potatoes and chicken were then placed on trays, cooked and put in the frig, ready for reheating and packing the next day.
Jordan and Sarita chopped and mixed the salad, which was then packed into containers by Jordan and Noah and put into the refrigerator for packing the next day.
Natan, meanwhile, started counting out items for packing – 50 each of the green bags, water, utensil packs, and applesauce cups. He and Noah then packed those items, leaving the bags ready for the remaining items.
Sarita and Lou assisted by Sarah Steindel and Carol Rothman finished up on Tuesday – reheating and packing the chicken and potatoes, cooking veggie patties for our vegan and vegetarian guests, and adding the salad, rolls and cookies to the bags.
Zachary Nadel delivered the food to the Office.

Shomrei provides 50 meals to MESH on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. We need volunteers to help prepare and pack the food.
For those interested in volunteering who are not available on Tuesday afternoons, we are brainstorming different ways to make it work. Let us know what would work for you.
Additionally, each Monday afternoon, we deliver any usable food leftover from Kiddish to MESH.
Volunteer at the MESH Site
Volunteers are also welcome to help serve food 6 nights a week, Monday through Saturday, 4:30-6:30 pm at the MESH site, 619 Bloomfield Ave, Montclair.
