Master Chef Joan Zief cooked up a down home feast for 32 of our MESH guests. Along with Sous Chef, Lynne Kurzweil, the main dish included tilapia with a roasted garlic and herb panko crust, homemade baked macaroni and cheese and sautéed greens (collard and mustard). Rounding out the meal was a slice of whole grain bread, clementines, cookies, peanuts, taffy, a water bottle and a breakfast bar for the morning.
In addition to 32 hot meals, we also packed up 11 cold meals consisting of an 8 oz container of whitefish salad, a bagel, and health salad, plus a hearty portion of Mac n cheese, cookies, clementines, peanuts, taffy, cookies, water and breakfast bar. Many thanks to the Dembrow family for contributing all the leftovers from Saturday’s kiddish. Aileen Grossberg stopped by to help pack up and then delivered the cold meals plus additional leftover platters of tuna and salads which MESH will use to supplement meals later this week. Joan and Lynne completed packing the hot meals and Lynne delivered the rest of the bags to The Office while Joan finished cleaning up.
Attendance at MESH has picked up quite a bit, most likely due to the central location, extended hours and activities and fellowship offered to the clients. MESH is asking for 50 meals which is not feasible for our very small crew of MESH volunteers on a weekly basis. We were able to provide extra food this week from leftovers but ordinarily we’ve limited our weekly meals to 30. It’s possible we could raise more funds but our volunteer crew is quite slim. We lack the people power.
There are still dates to sign up through the end of June. Over the summer, as you consider where you might want to direct your sustaining share volunteer hours, sign up for MESH beginning again in September.

About MESH:
The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for Hope) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches. While in-person service has been discontinued, we are providing hearty, nutritious take-out meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights. Please help fulfill this crucial mitzvah by volunteering to help with food preparation or bagging or by making a donation at: shomrei.org/donate.
