From Captain Fern Heinig:

Last night the Carol Starr Cafe had a full house of 24 people and provided three take away meals. We welcomed some new guests and enjoyed the company of many of our regulars.

The Chaos Squad was a full crew last night and we welcomed a couple of new recruits. Hailey with rookie Magdelana, Alana and Orly (new to the squad), and regulars Henry, Sienna, Hannah, Taylor, Evan, Maggie and Kal were the wonderful sous chefs and servers. Adults Holly and Alana stayed in the kitchen to clean. The Squad took front of house direction from the wonderful MESH staff, Lucy, Khahari, and Joe.

The kids did all the cooking. Sienna and Hannah made the first course of roasted cauliflower and broccoli salad with a balsamic/mustard vinaigrette. Maggie took charge of a filling vegetable soup and making the roasted carrots. Henry made 10 lbs of Fern’s famous meatballs. Taylor and Evan peeled 10lbs of potatoes and Alana and Orly mashed them for the finished product. Hailey and Magdalena took charge of plating the food with the proper garnish. Kal cut the rolls and buttered the bread.

We also want to thank STOM and Ayla for providing a home made dessert of brownies and blondies.

About MESH:

The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches.  Volunteers at each institution cook and serve hearty, nutritious meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights. A good meal, and perhaps as important, social interaction and companionship offer respite to those who need it. Please help fulfill this crucial mitzvah by volunteering.
