MESH Report Oct 18, 2022

Chef Fern Heinig prepared her famous Salmon dinner in her home kitchen, dropping everything off at Shomrei ready to be portioned and packed into 30 Grab N Go bags by the experienced duo of Alex Kent and Lynne Kurzweil.

The sumptuous meal included Baked Salmon with Lemon and Tzatziki Sauce, Mediterranean Cous Cous Salad, Shaved Brussels Sprouts and Lemon Cole Slaw, a hearty roll, Clementines, Black & White Cookies, a Granola Bar and a water bottle. Joe Tyson of the MESH staff and his lovely wife, Dorothy, picked up the bags at 4:45 pm for distribution on the lawn of the Unitarian Church on Church Street.

The food insecure population in our community is growing and MESH is the only organization that provides an evening meal six days a week.  Every Tuesday, a small handful of Shomrei congregants plan, shop, prepare, pack and mostly fund the cost of the food.  Packing materials and staple supplies are paid for by donations to the Shomrei MESH fund and a small line item in the budget.

About MESH:

The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches. While in-person service has been discontinued, we are providing hearty, nutritious take-out meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights. Please help fulfill this crucial mitzvah by volunteering to help with food preparation or bagging or by making a donation at: shomrei.org/donate.
