Chef Fern prepared her famous meatballs with mashed potatoes and Moroccan Carrot Salad. Accompanied by a delicious challah roll, clementines, fudge roll for dessert and a breakfast bar and water. Chef Fern’s Salmon was back on the menu this past Tuesday. Always a fan favorite, the Salmon was served with lemon slice and a side of Tzaziki sauce. Included with the entree was a hearty portion of Fern’s homemade Noodle Kugel, plus Kale Salad, a roll, a water bottle, two clementines and delicious Chocolate Chip Cookies homemade by Collin Brooks. Where does it say that brisket is the dish of choice on Passover? Where does it say that gefilte fish is de rigueur? Where does it day that sweet wine is a must? And where does it say that one is obligated to replicate everyday food rather than going with natural food that can be eaten anytime?
The Lampert Library’s staff (me) has researched the questions: there are no rules. Much of what’s served- other than ritual foods- is just custom and what was available or what could be adapted. Even among the ritual foods there is a lot of choice. Continue reading
Cauliflower has come into its own. It’s become the vegetable of the moment. It’s healthy, versatile, and usually available. You can rice it, dice it, roast it, puree it… and hide it.
Enjoy some of these cauliflower discoveries that are certainly not like the way my mother made cauliflower.

Dear Friends and Family,
We are happy to report that the weather cooperated and we were able to complete our walk in support of the Howard Ellis Glioblastoma Research Fund. Nearly twenty people and one dog participated and we canvassed the East Coast from Connecticut down to South Carolina. Thus far in 2020, we have raised more than $10,000 for the Howard Ellis Glioblastoma Research Fund through Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and we hope to increase that between now and the end of the year.

I’m truly excited to join the Board and work together to continue to grow our Jewish community at Shomrei. Seeing my daughter’s joy being in the preschool here has inspired me to get more involved and hopefully bring skills and experience that will help Shomrei flourish, especially in these unique times. Our youngest daughter will soon join the preschool and I have no doubt that together they will discover their Jewish identity in this very nurturing environment. As a career and leadership coach, I love the practice of personal development and therefore am always encouraging myself and others to strive for ‘better’! I look forward to doing that with all of you, too.

I am so happy to be a Trustee on Shomrei’s board and look forward to serving the community in this new way. I love all things Shomrei. I come to services regularly, participate in Torah Study and one of my favorite things in life is to be with the community and enjoy kiddush on Shabbat. (A shout-out to Aileen and Beryl.) I am also the Co-Chair of the Social Action Committee with Sarita Eisenberg. My husband Nick is a past President and my children Josh and Nina are part of the Shomrei family. Shomrei is quite simply my home away from home.
The 2020 Annual Meeting of Congregation Shomrei Emunah occurred on Monday, June 22, 2020. Members voted on a number of items including the budget and election of new members of the Board of Trustees.

The Sunday before Passover I sent a note to my family asking if they may be interested in a family zoom seder. I promised no more than a half hour. Passover is my favorite holiday and being sheltered alone, I needed some kind of holiday. To my surprise, 90% agreed. My immediate family is twenty five people. Though my friends reserve a place at my seder table a year in advance, my family will argue to only eat and no actual seder. My house, my rules and I force the seder.
Because of the “lock down”, our usual guests at the Carol Starr Cafe are experiencing more food challenges than the normal week. MESH is making an effort to supply take away meals for all who need.
The Chaos Crew took the “Meal” challenge last night. We decided to perform a double mitzvah, feed our usual guests and support a local restaurant which is struggling to stay open. Jackie’s Grillette will not close their doors as long as they break even daily. They do not want to lay off any of their employees who need their paycheck to feed their own families. Jackie’s rose to the challenge and supplied 30 individual bags with a very hearty sandwich, cole slaw, and a bottle of water.
