A Vibrant Vibe

There is a statement that starts most of our communications – “Shomrei Emunah,  A Vibrant Community serving ……”

Through my years on the board, I have spent many hours listening to board discussions about how to make us “vibrant” again.  Vibrancy, a state of high energy and enthusiasm, can be fostered but cannot be forced.  Vibrancy is something we feel and experience.

Vibrancy is the enthusiasm we had at this year’s Welcome Back BBQ.  Vibrancy is the positive energy we had after this year’s High Holidays.  Vibrancy is the emotional lift we had from the Syrian Supper Club.  Vibrancy is the exhilaration we felt from the Eric Singer Memorial Fund inaugural event of the Montclair Orchestra.

And Vibrancy is what was felt at this year’s Chanukah Party.

The energy in the Social Hall could not be contained.  Young kids were doing arts and crafts, assisted by older teens.  The 16 member Simcha Band, largest we have had in my memory, featured musicians of all ages.  The latka crew made 650 latkas while other members brought salads and desserts.  The feeling from the menorah lighting in the sanctuary was warm and fuzzy, like a warm comforter on a very cold night.

Vibrancy is what people brought with them to Shomrei.  Seasoned members (nice way of saying long term) were meeting old friends and making new ones.  The large number of families celebrating together amazed guests.  And our newer members just expect this atmosphere from Shomrei.

The holiday of Chanukah celebrates Rededication.  I felt like this year’s Chanukah party was a rededication to Shomrei for many members.  We actually have become a vibrant community.  Lets continue in 2018.

Happy secular New Year.
