STOM Giving Back

IMG_0754

Over the last few months the Shomrei Teens of Montclair, STOM, has spent time volunteering at the Babrow Kosher Food Pantry which is housed at Oheb Shalom Congregation in South Orange. The food pantry serves over 200 families each month from local communities. Donations to the food pantry are both state and privately funded.

One Wednesday night each month, volunteers gather at the food pantry and pack bags of nonperishable groceries. The operation is volunteer driven and its organizers take great pride in making sure that each months bags are filled with a variety of foods that its recipients will enjoy. On the following Sunday a second round of volunteers gather and distribute the food to its recipients. Many of those volunteers are the Sunday school students who attend Oheb Shalom Congregation.

Getting out into the community and spending time at the food pantry has been a great way for STOM to give back and get involved. We have been able to meet members of the larger Jewish community and while its not the most labor intensive work or the most complicated task, we are excited to continue volunteering to help feed those in need. Our STOM teens enjoy spending the time together, as well, and we are noticing their strong commitment to one another and the greater community is a wonderful driving force behind many of our STOM activities.
