Mesh Cafe May 2, 2017

From Captain Fern Heinig:

Eighteen guests joined us for dinner last night. Adrienne, Bonny and Joe, our MESH staff, said it has been light the last couple of weeks because of SS checks being received but do expect more guests next week.

The first two courses, fruit salad and green salad, utilized leftovers from the weekend events. The main was sweet and hot meatballs, a MESH favorite, fresh steamed green beans, and white rice. Dinner was finished with cookies and tangerines as dessert. Nine pounds of meatballs was happily consumed by guests and staff – all went home full.

Very special Montclair State volunteer Veronica did her final night at MESH. She has completed university and will be graduating in a couple of weeks. A big thank you for four years volunteering with MESH and being a regular at Shomrei. She is a special young lady and we wish her only good things in her future.

We had four hard working Shomrei teens rounding out the crew; Gaby, Pacey, Siona and Amalia. They helped prep, serve, and dish wash. They were a very efficient crew and left the kitchen in great shape.

One final note: Joe will no longer be allowed to let people into the building early, either to use the bathroom or avoid weather conditions. He is also no longer allowed to give chairs to guests while they are waiting to come inside. This change came about due to insurance liability concerns.

MESH in dire financial straits.
This past winter MESH (the parent organization) began opening its overnight respite doors when temperatures were 32 degrees which increased its service count to capacity and beyond nightly. The success of MESH’s respite service unfortunately has nearly depleted its operating funds for 2017. Please consider contributing to the MESH 32 campaign by making a donation of $32 dollars or more to help MESH continue to provide overnight respite services for those experiencing homelessness and food insecurity in our community. Donations can be made via the MESH website or by check payable to MESH, Inc. PO Box 1919 Montclair, New Jersey 07042.

Note: MESH contributions made to Shomrei fund the food purchases for the MESH Cafe at Shomrei. The organization behind it all is MESH (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless).
