Message to the Congregation about Haiti

People wade across a flooded street while Hurricane Matthew passes through Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Shalom to All –

The tragically beleaguered country of Haiti has again been dealt a devastating blow. If you would like to send contributions to help in its recovery from the hurricane, please consider these organizations: Fondation Aquin Solidarité, American Jewish World Service, Partners in Health.

Fondation Aquin Solidarité

Fondation Aquin Solidarité  (FAS) is a non-profit organization, founded in 2005, to provide educational, cultural, sports and economic support and mentoring to the city and the people of Aquin, located 117kms southwest of Port-au-Prince.   Hurricane Matthew literally destroyed all major infrastructure work and buildings in the city and surrounding districts, leaving more than 70% of the 70,000+ population of the Commune of Aquin in dire straits. Funds are urgently needed to buy essential goods for the impacted and displaced people, to rebuild schools, churches, the pier of Aquin and to provide assistance to entrepreneurs so they rebuild their business.

American Jewish World Service has been working for many years with a network of grassroots Haiti organizations.  In response to the hurricane, they are working with their 25 partner organizations in Haiti to support them in four priority areas:

  • Rebuilding damaged infrastructure
  • Assisting communities of migrants and refugees living in precarious tent cities along the Haitian/Dominican border
  • Addressing the expected cholera epidemic in the wake of the massive flooding
  • Preparing civil society and watchdog groups for the Haitian presidential elections—now postponed due to the hurricane

Partners in Health (PIH) has been working in Haiti for nearly three decades, and is the largest non-governmental health care provider in the country. In the wake of the hurricane, their efforts are focused on responding to the likely spike in cholera cases, supporting the clinics and hospitals affected by the hurricane, and getting safe drinking water into the affected communities.
