Debra Caplan
Term June 2015-May 2018
I am a faculty member at Baruch College in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. I am on the Board of Harvard’s Mellon School of Theater and Performance Research, which I founded, and I also co-founded The Digital Yiddish Theatre Project. As stage director, dramaturg, and translator for the Target Margin Theater, I helped develop two seasons of Yiddish theater material.
We joined Shomrei when we moved to Montclair in 2013 and enrolled our children, first Zev (5), then Maya (2.5) in the Shomrei preschool. As newcomers to town, my familyand I have been delighted to find a home in Shomrei, and we felt instantly connected to this community from the moment we entered. In addition to the preschool, I’ve also been involved with MESH and playing piano and accordion in the Park Street Band (otherwise known as the “doctors’ band”) for Kabbalat Shabbat. Now that my oldest is heading off to kindergarten, I look forward to working with the board to build programming and community for young families, especially families coming out of the preschool.

Lanny and I joined Shomrei in 1979 shortly after moving to Montclair. Having both grown up in conservative Jewish homes, we were seeking a warm and caring Jewish community in which to raise our growing family. We met many of our closest friends through Shomrei’s “Young Couples Club”.
Over the years I have been involved in various ways, often related to my professional and personal passion…food, (pancake breakfasts, hamentaschen baking, shiva meals, dessert baking for events, co chair of MESH, kiddish prep,etc) Other areas include Sisterhood, membership committee, Preschool, Hebrew School Board of Ed, Mitzvah Corps (original Mensch Squad). Lanny and I and our children, Martin, Rebecca and Molly, have all grown up with Shomrei, celebrating and coping with life’s joys and sorrows. Happily, Martin and his family will be joining the Shomrei community this summer.
I am honored to be asked to join the Board at this exciting time to help set Shomrei on a course for continued growth.

Our synagogue is the spiritual home of a warm and inviting community of Jews in and around Montclair, New Jersey. We welcome individuals, couples and families of diverse backgrounds and orientations. We observe an egalitarian, vibrant Judaism, balancing openness and traditional practice.
