Oh, Today, We’ll Merry, Merry Be….

The Purim story, told in the Megillah (or scroll) of Esther, one of several special supplemental readings along with the Song of Songs, The Book of Ruth and others is not really a kids’ story although we often promote it as such.

True, there is that Cinderella element but would you want your kids to know what REALLY went on in the king’s palace?

library 2016 mar16 Esther2rembrandt (1)Ahashuerus is not only a classic buffoon but also a really bad ruler, leaving the governing of his country to a hateful, vindictive man. Good thing the king finally realizes it. Who knows what would have happened to his kingdom.

It’s the outsider who saves the day…and the beautiful woman, too, of course. But she has to be pushed.

And where is God in all of this? God is mentioned nowhere although one might assume that the Deity is behind the whole thing.

The Purim story with its drama and appeal to the emotions and its ability to be parodied has been good fodder for art, music, and literature.

library 2016 mar16 esther6raananUnlike the actual Torah scroll, the megillah can be illustrated and some are beautifully illuminated.

It’s been adapted for young children and for adult readers also. Often the adaptations feature strong, resourceful women.
