On Tuesday, June 6th several Shomrei members attend a vigil in Montclair in support of refugees to the US. The vigil was held on the anniversary of the date the ship St. Louis full of refugees was turned away from American shores in 1939.
The gathering was attended by more than 30 people from neighboring congregations who wore stickers provided by HIAS which said “My People Were Refugees Too.” Members of Montclair clergy were there as well and spoke passionately about the need to provide support and to welcome refugees during these difficult times. Rabbi Elliott Tepperman of Bnai Keshet led the group in a number of songs and emphasized the need for us to continue to focus our attention on this critical issue.
