Passover began about one week early at the MESH Cafe at Shomrei. This past Tuesday night Chef Aileen Grossberg prepared a delicious pesadik meal since the Shomrei kitchen had already been kashered. Except for the egg and garlic matza, I’m sure it was transparent to our guests why this meal was different from all other meals.
We started with a yogurt onion dip with crudités and chips. Next up Orange glazed Tilapia, Roasted Carrots and Cauliflower and Sheila Schuman’s Mock Potato Kugel. Dessert was cantaloupe, strawberries, macaroons and cookies. The crowd erupted in applause when the menu was announced.
Adult volunteers were Susan Rosenblatt and Rob Faulkner. Shomrei teens were Amalia, Gabby and Gabby’s friend, Eve, and first timers Margarlit and Elana. From MHS, Teddy and Sam. MSU student Samira, MESH Intern Veronica and Yale student, Leonard. MESH staffers Adrienne and Joe were as delightful and helpful as always.
Towards the end of the evening, one guest asked Rob if we had any extra sleeping bags or a blanket. We don’t, but Rob spoke with Adrienne who had a few items at home for just such purposes. She made a quick trip and returned with a warm blanket for a very grateful guest. Rob, Adrienne and one guest…..the miracle of doing mitzvot. Next week, our guests will be served by St Marks Methodist Church while Shomrei hosts a Community Seder on the second night of Passover. Dr. Gwen Ames, Executive Director of MESH, and her husband, Donald Ames, will be our guests. A zeissen Pesach to all!
