For the past sixty-four days, I have felt hopeless, helpless and frustrated by many of the actions of the new administration. Rather than yelling at the TV screen and flailing my arms in despair, especially regarding the Moslem travel ban, I was grateful when Nick Levitin and Andy Silver organized the Shomrei Refugee Committee. Finally, a call to action! Thanks to their research and research by other committee members, we now have information about several agencies that occasionally need a helping hand. Or two or three. And make them strong, loving hands, as well. Continue reading

Purim Simcha Band Plays Its Heart Out
For the sixth year in a row, the multi-generational Simcha Band played our hearts out at our annual Purim celebration. Setting the lively tone for the Costume Parade and then playing in between chapters of the Megillah, the band added a new dimension to its name “Simcha” Band! When the Megillah readers chanted Haman’s name, the band successfully drowned out his name. Continue reading
Minyan at Home Resumes Nov 2
The Wednesday evening minyan, a staple of our congregation for the past eight years, has been on hiatus since June. Now that summer is a distant memory and the holidays are behind us, it is time to resume our monthly Maariv service at the home of Merrill and Andy Silver. Continue reading
Minyan at Home
On the first Wednesday of each month, Minyan at Home is held at the home of Merrill & Andy Silver. During our beautiful and brief Ma’ariv (evening service), we will daven in both Hebrew and English. The service includes the Mourner’s Kaddish. It’s a nice, social, meaningful way to conclude the day.
Please join us and invite your friends and neighbors to come along.

Simchat Torah is Cancelled
The schedule on the synagogue website said, “Simchat Torah services Monday, October 5, 2015 at 7:30 PM.” As a matter of fact, it stated it twice – on the calendar and on the list of holiday events. Imagine our surprise, … Continue reading
An Historic Moment For Shomrei
After two years of development and discussion within our community, the Board of Trustees voted last Thursday to recommend that Shomrei adopt a progressive new “Sustaining Share” system of membership, which would reinvent the way we define and think about synagogue membership. Now it is your turn. At the annual meeting taking place on Wednesday, May 27, the model will be put to a full congregational membership vote.

I Believe in Shomrei
I believe in …
… Rabbi Greenstein, for showing us the connection between traditional Jewish values and prayer, and our everyday lives.
… Heather Brown and Sara Birnbaum who, through their guidance of our children’s education programs, help to instill those values in our next generation.
… Nick Levitin and the rest of the Board’s tireless leadership.
… Marge Wise and the entire Shomrei staff for their skill in facilitating all that happens at Shomrei.
… Shomrei’s core of dedicated volunteers, without whom we could not run our litany of programs.
