On a spring Sunday, Andy Silver and I delivered some much-needed clothing and a TV, provided by members of the Shomrei community, to a Syrian refugee family in Elizabeth, NJ. Bara’a and Tammam seemed tired when we arrived. That, of course, is understandable — being a refugee means once again being in a foreign land, not speaking the language and, for the most part, at least for now, being dependent on strangers. In addition, Bara’a and Tammam have two small children and are expecting a third and our visit came in the middle of the daily Ramadan fast! Continue reading →

Shomrei Refugee Assistance Group Attends Vigil to Honor Refugees

On Tuesday, June 6th several Shomrei members attend a vigil in Montclair in support of refugees to the US.  The vigil was held on the anniversary of the date the ship St. Louis full of refugees was turned away from American shores in 1939.

Welcome to New Board Members

Fern at board meetingYasher koach to the 2016-17 Board of Trustees and thank you to outgoing Board members – Recording Secretary David Kanegis, Trustees Debra Caplan. Replacing them are Beryl Hiller, Meredith Lopez and Dan Winter.

Yasher koach to Marc Chalom, who is stepping down as Vice President for Building and Grounds. Marc will continue on the Board as a Trustee.

Shomrei’s MESH Cafe was open on a snowy night this last night in January. We served 17 guests a hearty meal. Captain and Chief Chef Fern, with soux chefs Arden Epstein, Susan Rosenblatt, and Veronica (Montclair State) served a very appreciated home cooked four course meal consisting of Egg Salad on a bed of lettuce, hearty vegetable soup, Chicken Cacciatore (chicken thighs cooked in tomato sauce, onions, peppers, and mushrooms) with pasta and green beans, and dessert of cookies and tangerines for dessert. Kitchen Gets Organized

Thanks to Beryl Hiller the kitchen is well on its way to being a model of efficiency. Beryl has a great talent for organization and seeing how items can be stored together. In the last few few days Beryl has brought her talents to the kitchen, analyzing its contents including the decorative papergoods,  and  logically arranging equipment and paper goods.

All of Shomrei’s kitchen volunteers thank you Beryl!  Preparing meals for MESH, planning kiddushes, and cooking for special events will be much easier if everything is in its place.
