I transported the 25 Grab N Go Bags to The Office on Bloomfield Avenue. MESH Staffer, Mr Joe Tyson, helped unload the bags and we set them up on the bar and waited for the guests who began entering at 5:30 pm. I handed a bag to each guest as they signed in. Twenty four guests came by, about half choosing to sit down to eat and the rest taking the bags with them. Mr Tyson saved the 25th bag for “Mike” since he knew that Mike would be coming by once the Library was closed at 6 pm.
The setup at The Office is evolving. We’ve been asked to adjust our count down to 25 meals from 30 since fewer guests have been coming. Mr Tyson explained that for those who have cars there is no place to park. The situation is not ideal but at least we have an indoor facility where guests can sit down if they choose to.
In addition to Chef and kitchen helpers/packers, we are in need of a driver who can pick up the bags at Shomrei between 4:45 and 5 pm and bring the bags to The Office on Bloomfield Ave. There is a small parking lot off Midland Ave with a back entrance to the restaurant. Mr Tyson also appreciates one or more helpers who can stay until 6 pm, otherwise he is there by himself. If you would like to help out please use the sign up at: shomrei.org/mesh
About MESH:
The Carol Starr MESH Cafe at Shomrei (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) is a cooperative effort between the MESH organization and local synagogues and churches. While in-person service has been discontinued, we are providing hearty, nutritious take-out meals for the hungry. Shomrei’s turn is on Tuesday nights. Please help fulfill this crucial mitzvah by volunteering to help with food preparation or bagging or by making a donation at: shomrei.org/donate.
