Report from Captain Stuart Green:

On a crisp autumn evening, the MESH cafe hosted 23 guests for a delicious and nourishing meal. The menu consisted of freshly made broiled salmon served with a selection of leftovers repurposed from Avital Ely’s bat mitzvah lunch, including a tuna salad and egg salad appetizer, with challah, sesame noodles, tomato and cucumber salad, quiche, and cookies. Staffing was light: Chef John Lasiter worked his magic on the fish and leftovers, and washed pots, while MESH professionals Adrienne, Bonny, and Joe worked the front of the house

Last Tuesday night we welcomed 23 grateful guests to the MESH Cafe at Shomrei.  When the group learned that Chef John Lasiter was in the kitchen they applauded, even before the menu was announced!  Chef John, along with sous chefs Adrienne and Elliot,  met their expectations as evidenced by the empty platters returned to the kitchen.  First course was hummus and pita chips and several guests asked for seconds.  (A few years ago I recall hummus not being a popular item.  Our guests have now embraced a Shomrei staple!).

Cooking with the JLC Kids

cook

All the Wednesday JLC kids and I spent the last two Wednesdays cooking together.  Last week they learned the recipes and this week they cooked themselves (with a little help). They divided into teams and had a competition. The younger ones making dessert  – a whipped cream and pound cake affair. The older kids made homemade Falafel from scratch – from the dried chick peas (the only way to make authentic Falafel!). We pureed, chopped and mixed.  Also on the menu was Tahinah Sauce with imported Israeli Tahinah, Labne (yogurt with herbs and lemon zest), Israeli Salad and Pita/Zaatar crisps. Continue reading

Purim Simcha Band Plays Its Heart Out

IMG_1476

For the sixth year in a row, the multi-generational Simcha Band played our hearts out at our annual Purim celebration. Setting the lively tone for the Costume Parade and then playing in between chapters of the Megillah, the band added a new dimension to its name “Simcha” Band! When the Megillah readers chanted Haman’s name, the band successfully drowned out his name. Continue reading

How to Save Your Knuckles and Have Your Latkes, Too

3146045284_2fd18c16ca_zkitchen_at_shomrei

We’re all familiar with the tradition of eating latkes on Hanukkah. Technically the word latke means a small pancake. Latkes may contain many ingredients besides potatoes, but the potato latke has become the go-to pancake for the holiday.

However, the potato pancake is a late comer to the latke world. In fact, it would have been impossible to have potatoes in pancakes before about the 1500s as potatoes are not native to Europe and were imported from the “New World”, the Americas. Continue reading
