Carol Starr Mesh Cafe May 31, 2018

Report from Captain Stuart Green:

On a sultry Tuesday evening in late May, the Carol Starr MESH cafe hosted 22 guests. Naturally, given temperatures in the nineties, it was just the time for the walk-in refrigerator to go on the fritz. A refrigerator repair man worked on it diligently until he cut his finger and had to go to the emergency room (he apparently will be okay). Another refrigerator repair man showed up and provided a temporary fix. Lisa Zelenetz stuck through it all. Continue reading

From Captain Lynne Kurzweil

Shomrei MESH Cafe on location welcomed 17 grateful guests to Union Baptist Church on Midland Avenue in Montclair.  Our Ace Team led by Sarita Eisenberg and including Sarah and Charles Steindel prepared the food at Sarita’s home. The piping hot meal was quickly packed up and transported to the church. During the opening remarks guests were told that even though Shomrei always prepares homemade meals, this meal was, in fact, prepared in Sarita’s home. Applause erupted even before the menu was announced!  Continue reading

Co-chefs Sarah Steindel and Sarita Eisenberg operated like a well-oiled team, never missing a beat and timing the meal perfectly. Continue reading

MESH Jan 17 2017From Captain Linda Ariel:

On a dark rainy raw wintery night, Shomrei Emunah welcomed twenty-two guests into our warm bright home. Sarita Eisenberg and Sarah Steindel were the chefs who created a wonderful nutritious meal from not only food that they had purchased but also from repurposed food from the kiddush and hosting IHN.

The menu for the evening began with a delicious green salad with artichoke hearts as the surprise, with bread and butter on the side. This was followed by baked tilapia in a lemon mustard sauce complimented by roasted broccoli and carrots and warm savory rice and beans. The dessert was fresh fruit salad with Oreos on the side. The guests were most appreciative of the food and expressed through compliments to the chefs and partaking of seconds that were available. Lost in Tel Aviv: In Search of the Perfect Hummus

IMG_1016

outside of the jazz club

Secret Tel Aviv listed 2 nearby places as the best hummus in Tel Aviv. We google mapped directions, taking a screen shot to save them since we would not have wifi once we left the hotel.

We easily found place #1 but it was closed; so we followed the directions to place #2.

Did I say that we had saved the directions as a screen shot? That means no corrections if (when) we took a wrong turn. We were at the market in the Yemenite quarter. The last places were closing up for the day. It was very dark. We could not see any street signs. And the street was turning into a stream as shop owners hosed down the sidewalks in front of their stalls.

Lost and Found in Tel Aviv: A Tale of Two Devices

We arrived in Israel after a 9 hour flight – unable to sleep and too tired to read, I watched a movie and numerous episodes of Downtown Abbey during the flight.

I am gathering my things to deplane, but I cannot find my cellphone. I last had it just before take off when I switched it to airplane mode. So it cannot be in my backpack, which was in the overhead compartment. That leaves only my back pockets and my very tiny purse, neither a place where a cell phone could stay hidden. I check the seat pocket and the floor. The cell phone is nowhere to be found. Continue reading

IMG_0341From Captain Sarita Eisenberg

Outside it was chill and rainy. Inside 25 guests enjoyed warmth and comfort food.  Chef Melissa Elbaum, assisted by Sarita Eisenberg (and a cameo appearance by Aileen Grossberg), whipped together a 3-course meal: a salad of baby arugula & spinach with artichoke hearts, hearts of palm, and corn; a hearty beef stew with potatoes and veggies accompanied by rolls; finished off with fruit salad and rugelach. The meal was a huge hit and there was plenty for seconds of every course.
